Ways to Help Military Personnel During the Holidays

No one should be alone during the holidays, but that’s often the case for military personnel and their families. Fortunately, Operation We Are Here is chock full of programs, ideas, and ways to help military personnel during the holidays.

Help Create a Thanksgiving Meal Basket

There are a variety of organizations that take part in creating Thanksgiving meal baskets for members of the military. You can take part by bringing non-perishable food items to a location near you. It’s always better to have more than enough food for Thanksgiving meal baskets than not enough.

Invite a Military Member Over for the Holidays

Inviting a member of the military to Thanksgiving dinner or to celebrate the Christmas cheer is a great way to say thank you and provide them with food and merriment. If that isn’t an option, see if a local soup kitchen, church, or other organization in your area is working to help military families this holiday season.

Adopt a Military Family

Not all military personnel can return home for the holidays, and that can make their deployment even tougher than it already is for everyone involved. Create a care package and send it to those deployed, or take part in Shoeboxes for Military Spouses, a program that does exactly what the name entails.

We here at Highway Ford hope you’ll take part in thanking those who serve our great nation.

Meals on Wheels Thanksgiving: Ford Supplies Hot Meals to Detroit Seniors

For the eighth consecutive year, Ford joined forces with the Detroit Area Agency on Aging (DAAA) to supply over 6,000 hot Thanksgiving meals to Detroit seniors, as part of the Holiday Meals on Wheels Thanksgiving program.

“Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful and share with those we love and care about—especially our seniors, who are often alone on the holiday,” said Paul Bridgewater, DAAA president and CEO.  He goes on to say, “That’s why we are thankful for the Ford Motor Company Fund. They are driving away hunger on Thanksgiving with their generous donation that enables us to deliver fresh, hot traditional Thanksgiving meals to 6,000 seniors. It is not only a donation and the volunteers they’re supplying to DAAA, but a gift to our entire community.”

Help was provided by means of a $50,000 donation as well in addition to the numerous Ford employees and families who joined the community effort to provide seniors with holiday meals. The donation will also help DAAA’s daily meal service throughout the rest of the year.

Over the last five years, Ford employees—including some of ours at Highway Ford—volunteered at food banks through the automaker’s network of more than 50 mobile food pantries and as a results have contributed to supplying more than 6 million meals to the hungry. Recently, Ford also announced a $2 million investment toward feeding more people across the United States.
